Highline Botanical Garden Foundation Volunteer Board of Directors
The Highline Botanical Garden Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation in the State of Washington. The Foundation was begun by volunteers committed to creating a regional garden in the Highline area, beginning with the preservation of Elda Behm's English Country Garden. Through the efforts of many volunteers, City of SeaTac, and the Port of Seattle, the Foundation was able to move thousands of plants from Elda’s garden to the North SeaTac Park. The Garden has grown to cover 5 acres of our 11-acre site. We've partnered with plant societies for additional displays of roses, daylilies, irises, and fuchsia. The Seike Family Japanese Garden was also relocated to the garden. The Foundation has built infrastructure to sustain the garden: irrigation, pathways, water features, and greenhouse. Expansion occurs, according to the Garden's master plan, as funding is available.
Role of the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is working hard to build a strong future for the Garden. Board members serve on the Design Committee, Community Relations, and Fund-Raising Committee. Other members help with the important organizational responsibilities that make the Foundation a sound fiscal operation.
The Highline Botanical Garden Foundation Board meets once per month on the first Wednesday of each month at the North SeaTac Park Community Center. During the pandemic the Board meets virtually. Each Board member is asked to join at least one committee that may meet another 4 hours at least every other month. Board members often volunteer their time working in the garden, and contribute time and energy to such special events as plant sales, fundraising/marketing events, and the volunteer appreciation luncheon. On average Board members give four to six hours per month to the organization.
Funding Commitment All Board members are expected to support the Foundation as Patrons ($100 annual commitment) and are encouraged to contribute at a higher level. Since the Board recognizes that not every member is able to make a major financial contribution to the Garden, Board members are encouraged to volunteer. This can consist of everything from inviting possible donors to visit the garden, to helping organize a fund-raising event, or even grant writing.
Satisfaction Every Board member of the Highline Botanical Garden Foundation shares the joy of watching the Garden grow, bringing beauty to an area that has needed a place of respite for a long time. Surrounded by SeaTac International Airport, parts plants, and neighborhoods of families who have come to love the Park, the Highline Botanical Garden is a magical place.
