
Workforce Discovery Lab (WDL) is an exciting summer youth program serving students in the Highline and Tukwila public school districts. Our mission is clear and impactful: to act as a bridge connecting education with real-world workforce opportunities. Through hands-on workshops and partnerships with local businesses, WDL gives students the chance to develop professional skills, explore a variety of career paths, and prepare for their future success. It is a free internship with low barriers, allowing for discovery high-earning career opportunities.
Each summer, students participate in a fully immersive on-site workshops over the course of a week. These workshops introduce them to a diverse range of career fields, including technology, culinary arts, aviation, engineering, finance, business, photography, dance, medicine, politics, hospitality and more.
In addition to exploring these industries, WDL hosts a specialized masterclass designed to prepare students for future job opportunities. Topics include resume building, crafting an elevator pitch, taking professional headshots, mastering interview skills, and creating a standout LinkedIn profile.
At the end of the program, we hold a special graduation ceremony where students have the opportunity to share their experiences, insights, and personal growth with their family and friends. This celebration not only recognizes their hard work and achievements but also builds their confidence in public speaking and self-expression. To honor their commitment and the skills they’ve gained, each student is awarded a $500 stipend as a reward for their dedication to learning and professional development.
